Vampires and Werewolves: Our Generations Obsession

The other night I was flipping through the channels and with nothing on, stumbled upon MTV's new show, "Teen Wolf."  After watching a little bit of it, I realized the story line wasn't too bad.  I mean, high school can be hard enough to fit in and now the main character, Scott has to deal with not only being a teen, but also how to learn to be a werewolf.  Now many people might be thinking, "Why would a show like that be made?" (because in all honesty, that's what I originally thought as well).  But something must have caused producers to want to create such a show.

With "Twilight's" incredible success, along with teen favorites, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and the more recent, "Vampire Diaries," it seems as though our generation is obsessed with vampires and more recently, the werewolf.  When it comes to vampires such as Edward Cullen of "Twilight," the romanticism, along with the idea of being protected and living forever may appeal to many young women.  Also, the tough Buffy was popular most likely because it was a show where the girl wasn't the "damsel in distress", yet the protector.  So, it was only a matter of time until other mythical creatures such as werewolves got their time in the spotlight.  Thanks to Taylor Lautner, werewolves have become extrememly popular and have allowed for such shows as "Teen Wolf" to be created.  Maybe its the romantic and the "bad boy" mix, but also how these shows provide a sense of adult fairy tales and it's only a matter of time until other mythical creatures take center stage (especially with "True Blood" coming back this summer).
